The University of Innsbruck seeks a Data Steward & Research Software Officer to support and further develop data- and analysis-intensive work in economics and statistics. The position combines substantial technical responsibility with close intellectual proximity to empirical research and advanced analytical practice.
The role is aimed at candidates with first-hand experience in empirical research or research-adjacent analytical environments who also enjoy designing and implementing high-end technical solutions. You will contribute to the development and maintenance of a modern data and software infrastructure that meets the requirements of 21st-century empirical science.
In this position, you serve as a key interface between researchers and IT services, translating analytical and research requirements into sustainable technical solutions.
Your tasks:
- Design and maintain secure, scalable data infrastructures with central IT services.
- Curate datasets and manage integration, documentation, and access rights.
- Implement data archiving and reproducibility solutions.
- Translate user requirements into technical solutions at the IT interface.
- Support data- and software-intensive projects.
- Develop software tools, workflows, and automated data pipelines (e.g. Python, R).
- Advise on FAIR data, Open Science, and sustainable data management.
- Provide technical input for projects and proposals.
Your profile:
- Completed diploma, master's degree or PhD in data science, statistics, business informatics, economics or a related field
- Strong knowledge of data management, data architecture and IT security
- Experience in the development of software, data pipelines and workflows (e.g. in Python or R)
- Interest in or experience with methods and principles of reproducibility and open science (FAIR Data)
- Experience with databases, APIs and cloud computing systems
- Knowledge of research practice and understanding of research processes, own empirical research experience is an asset
- Interest in or experience in consulting and training
- Very good command of English; willingness to learn German
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Creativity and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and reliably
Our offer:

The core appointment comprises 20 hours per week at Digital Science Services, with the option to take on an additional 20 hours per week as a postdoctoral researcher or senior scientist at the Faculty of Economics and Statistics for a period of up to six years.
