The Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ECONOMICS

The position is Swedish-speaking, in any field of economics, and with appointment expected to start in August 2027. The position carries a low teaching load and is on the tenure track system of the University of Helsinki with an initial appointment of 3-5 years, depending on the applicant’s qualifications.

University of Helsinki is Finland’s largest and oldest academic institution and generally ranks among the 100 best universities in the world. The position is based in the Discipline of Economics at the Faculty of Social Sciences. The Faculty is Finland’s leading research and education institute in social sciences and the Discipline of Economics conducts high quality research in all main fields of economics and provides teaching at all levels. The Discipline is also a part of Helsinki Graduate School of Economics, an academic initiative for economic research and graduate education together with the economics units at Aalto University and the Hanken School of Economics.

Half of the selected candidate’s teaching will take place at the Discipline of Economics and requires good English skills (knowledge of Finnish is not required). The other half of the teaching consists of introductory-level economics taught in the Swedish language at the Swedish School of Social Science, an autonomous Swedish-language unit within the University of Helsinki. The selected candidate will also participate in the supervision of Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral theses in economics.

Qualifications

Applicants should hold a PhD degree in Economics (or a related field) by the start date and demonstrate potential for high-quality research and teaching.

All fields of economics will be considered for this position. However, as the Discipline of Economics provides methodologically oriented education in all areas of economics we especially encourage applicants with strong background in econometric and/or theoretical methods to apply.

Because the languages of instruction are Swedish and English, this position requires excellent proficiency in both languages. Knowledge of the Finnish language is not required.

The appointee is expected to reside in Finland while employed by the University of Helsinki. International staff are supported in relocating to Finland.

Annual gross salary for this position varies between 63 600 and 72 000 euros, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.
